A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
On behalf of the citizens and city of Oakland, it is my honor to welcome all participants in the inaugural Oakland Running Festival. This new event is as exciting for our city as it is for all of you who have chosen to participate in the various races. The return of the Marathon to our city after 25 years is a great asset.
Many thanks to the city agencies, police, public works, planning and the Oakland Convention & Visitors Bureau who committed their time, talent and expertise to assure the Oakland Running Festival will be a first-class event for years to come.
It is important to note this event is green in keeping with Oakland's reputation as one of the most environmentally conscious cities in the U.S. This approach minimizes the impact of the tons of compostable and recyclable trash generated by thousands of thirsty and hungry runners and their cheering families.
In addition to the economic impact the Running Festival brings, runners and their families from other states and countries get to experience Oakland. Thus this event serves as a wonderful platform to show off our great city to first-time visitors.
The ultimate winners of this event are the local charities who benefit from the revenue generated from the Oakland Running Festival. I am proud of the commitment of all who help to make this day special for our great city, especially the hundreds of volunteers.
Thank you for choosing the Oakland Running Festival. See you at the finish line.
Sincerely,
Ron Dellums
Mayor, City of Oakland
