IMT DES MOINES MARATHON RECAP
Race Recap
October 16, 2011 was a record-setting day for the IMT Des Moines Marathon. Ideal running conditions greeted more than 10,000 athletes, volunteers and spectators at Nollen Plaza in downtown Des Moines for the running of the 10th annual race.
Registrations
More than 7,600 athletes registered in the IMT Des Moines Marathon & Half Marathon, Bankers Trust Marathon Relay, The Principal Financial Group 5K Road Race, and Kids Run presented by Iowa Kidstrong. These numbers represent a 22% growth rate in registered athletes from the 2009 IMT Des Moines Marathon.
Race Records
Race records fell in the Men's IMT Des Moines Marathon & Half Marathon and Women's IMT Des Moines Marathon divisions. This included a course record of 2:12:54 by returning course record holder, James Kirwa of Kenya and Atalelech Asfaw of Ethiopia with a time of 2:37:55. Half Marathon course records were set by Ezkyas Tsegaya 1:03:45 of Ethiopia and Jenna Boren 1:1:03 from Minnesota.
Demographics
The IMT Des Moines Marathon is proudly supported by females in its home state. 60% of all registered athletes in 2011 were female and 74% of all registered athletes resided in the state of Iowa, with more than 400 towns represented. The race had athlete representation from 46 additional states, 5 countries, 2 Canadian provinces and 3 Unites States ARMY bases.
